About Jason ( Zilin Zhou )

I’m a product designer focused on building scalable systems across complex platforms. At PayPal, I work on high impact experiences where design decisions influence millions of users and carry meaningful business and operational implications. My work often sits at the intersection of growth, usability, security, and cost environments where tradeoffs must be clearly defined, measured, and aligned across cross-functional teams.

Over time, I’ve developed a strong interest in system level thinking: designing not only individual flows or features, but the underlying structures, patterns, and principles that allow products to scale sustainably. I’m particularly drawn to ambiguous problem spaces where constraints are high, requirements evolve quickly, and clarity must be created rather than assumed.

I care deeply about defining the right problem before designing solutions. Whether optimizing a complex funnel or evolving a platform experience, I focus on understanding behavioral signals, operational realities, and long term implications. For me, strong design is less about adding features and more about shaping coherent systems that support growth while maintaining usability and resilience.

Beyond shipping product, I invest in mentoring designers, contributing to the broader UX community, and refining my own thinking through writing and speaking. I see design not only as craft, but as a strategic discipline that shapes alignment, reduces ambiguity, and drives measurable outcomes over time.

If you’re interested in collaborating or exploring complex product challenges together, I’d be glad to connect.

Support for UX Community 🧑‍🎨

Beyond product work, I actively mentor designers through ADPList and serve as Director of Mentorship for Career Development at UXPA Austin.

Over the past few years, I’ve supported 100+ designers globally and helped facilitate structured mentorship programs that connect emerging and mid-career designers with experienced practitioners.

I also contribute to the UX community through writing, speaking, and judging at industry conferences and design awards sharing practical insights from system-level product work.

Community involvement is not separate from my product work; it’s a way I refine my thinking, stay connected to evolving perspectives, and support the next generation of designers.

Beyond Design 👨‍🍳

Outside of work, I enjoy cooking. A practice that reinforces many of the same principles I value in product design: patience, iteration, balance, and attention to detail.

Much like building scalable systems, cooking requires understanding constraints, working with limited resources, and making thoughtful tradeoffs to achieve the desired outcome. It’s a creative outlet that keeps me grounded and constantly learning.
